Are we destroying the earth in the name of development and progress?

The recent century has seen the greatest destruction of the planet’s environment. To gauge the stability of Earth, we have crossed seven of the nine planetary boundaries:

1. Climate Change (Breached) 🔴
   Extreme weather and warmth were caused by the atmospheric CO2 concentration surpassing the 350 ppm (parts per million) barrier.
2. Integrity of Biosphere (Biodiversity) (Breached) 🔴
   The condition of life on the planet. The rates of extinction is 100–1000 times greater than the background rate.
3. Land-System Change (Breached) 🔴
   The quantity of natural land, particularly forests, that is transformed for human use (cities, agriculture)
4. Freshwater Change (Breached) 🔴
   Large-scale irrigation, damming, and climate-driven droughts violate both blue and green water boundaries.
5. Biogeochemical Flows (Breached) 🔴
   We currently dump huge amounts of fertilizer into soils, which washes into oceans, creating massive “dead zones” where marine life cannot survive.
6. Novel Entities (Breached) 🔴
   The great majority of the estimated 350,000 different kinds of artificial compounds available on the market have never undergone environmental safety testing.
7. Ocean Acidification (Breached) 🔴
   Marine life is being corroded by the water, endangering the base of the food chain.
8. Atmospheric Aerosol Loading (Safe) ✅
   Smoke, dust, and soot are microscopic airborne particles that influence monsoon patterns and cloud formation.
9. Stratospheric Ozone Depletion (Safe) ✅
   The ozone layer, which protects humans from ultraviolet light.
